Five ski mountains are within easy reach. Cranmore, the valley's friendly hometown hill, is about 15 minutes up the road. King Pine, great for families, is close by to the south. Attitash brings the big vertical in Bartlett, around 20–25 minutes. Black Mountain in Jackson is the low-key, classic-New-England favorite. And Wildcat, up in Pinkham Notch, has the coldest runs and the best views of Mount Washington. When the lifts close, the sauna and cold plunge are waiting back home.
Off the slopes: snowshoe the quiet trails, or tap into the valley's snowmobile network of groomed backcountry trail.
The valley wakes up. Hike the drying trails, cast for trout in the Swift or the Saco, or play a round as the fairways green up. Fewer crowds, longer light.
Swim and paddle the Saco, cool off in the brook, or float the afternoon in a kayak or canoe. Bring the bikes for the valley's rail trails and mountain routes. Long days, cold water, and the plunge whenever you want it.
The valley at its most famous. Peak foliage lights up the notches, the leaf-peeping is unforgettable, and the hiking is at its best in cool, clear air. Drive the Kancamagus, climb a ledge, and come back to a sauna on a crisp night.
